We’d like to wish a Happy Mother’s Day to our favorite moms…Homeschool Moms! We hope you have been truly blessed and pampered by your families today. For all you do, you certainly deserve it! But, just for fun, we thought we’d share a little Mother’s Day trivia with you.

Did you know…

  • Anna Marie Jarvis, born in West Virginia in 1864, was the founder of Mother’s Day. In 1912, she launched a campaign to have one day of the year devoted to celebrating mothers and having that day recognized as a national holiday. She envisioned Mother’s Day as a reverent holiday where families would spend time together honoring their mothers, reflecting on all they do and attending church together. Her efforts were successful. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially declared Mother’s Day a national holiday and marked its calendar date to fall on the second Sunday in May. As years went on, however, Mother’s Day had grown too commercial for Jarvis. Ironically, she spent the remaining years of her life and wealth protesting, denouncing, and lobbying politicians to have it officially removed from the calendar. By the time of her death, in 1948, she herself had officially disowned the holiday.
  • The odds of a woman delivering twins is 1-in-33 and triplets or more 1-in-539. But, apparently someone forgot to tell Feodor Vassilyev’s first wife. She holds the record for the most children being born to one woman. Between 1725 and 1765, she gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, 7 sets of triplets, and 4 sets of quadruplets…for a total of 69 children!
  • When a female embryo is only six weeks old, God is already preparing her for motherhood as egg cells for future children begin to develop. By the time that precious baby girl is born, she carries within her ovaries all the egg cells she will ever have…about one million!
  • From the moment a baby is born until he/she turns eighteen, we have only 936 weeks to most influence them.
  • Lina Medina holds the record for becoming the world’s youngest mother. In 1939, five year old Lina Medina delivered a 6½-pound baby boy via cesarean section.
  • The oldest mother in Biblical times was Abraham’s wife Sarah. She was 91 years old when she gave birth to her first child. In 1997, 59 year old UK citizen Dawn Brooke became the oldest mother in modern history to conceive and give birth to a child naturally.
  • Jayne Bleackley holds the record for the shortest interval between the birth of two children. She gave birth to a son on September 3, 1999 and a daughter just six months later.
  • Mothers (and fathers!) are significant in the moral upbringing of their children which in turn affects society as a whole. George Washington attested to the importance of a mother when he said of his own, “All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual and physical education I received from her.”
  • The average woman living in the 17th century gave birth to 13 children. Today’s average is 2.4 children.
  • Americans love their mothers. In 2015, Americans spent 21.2 BILLION dollars on gifts for Mom.
  • God chose a woman to give birth to the light, hope, and Savior of the entire world.

Happy Mother’s Day! Thank you for all you do.

Her children rise up and bless her; Her husband also, and he praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done nobly, but you excel them all.” Proverbs 31:28-29
