Seven Things to Remember When Shopping for Homeschool Curriculum

As the end of the school year draws to a close we homeschool parents start doing what we love most…shopping for homeschool curriculum! It’s like Christmas for us! But, if we’re not careful we can get a little craaazy and end up having to take out a second mortgage on our home! To prevent that from happening to our family…and having to join “homeschoolers anonymous”… I have always tried to focus on seven things when shopping for curriculum.

Pray for guidance – God knows what you need. Trust him to guide you.

Determine Your Objectives and Stay Focused – What is it you want to accomplish on this journey? What are your end goals? Focus on those as you weigh your choices.

Consider how your children learn best – Homeschooling shouldn’t be about “bringing school home.” As homeschoolers, we have the freedom and opportunity to teach our children in a style that best meets their individual likes and needs. Do your research, and, by all means, ask for their input. Because the more say they have, the easier your job will be.

Trust your instincts – You know your children best. Go with your gut!

Make a list and stick to it – You’ll undoubtedly come across a few things you didn’t know you “had to have” that are absolutely perfect for your kids. Not to worry…a little of that’s okay! But, once you make your list, try to stick to it as much as possible.

Invest wisely – Seek out homeschool resources that teach subjects to multiple grade levels. Unit Studies are especially helpful in this regard and can, in the long run, save you a ton of money.

Think fun! Seek out sources that will make learning more fun for your children and teaching more fun for you! We only have the blessing of this homeschooling journey for a short while. In the blink of an eye it will be gone, and before you know it, they will be too. So, lighten up and remember to have FUN!
